Nongkrem Dance......

This is a one of the festival of dances of the Khasis. This festival gives thanks to the almighty God for a good harvest and also pray for peace and prosperity of the community. It is a relegious festival where ritualistic offerings are made to the ancestors of the ruling clan , the first maternal uncle and to the deity of Shillong asking for their blessings. After the relegious rites are over , the dancers begin their dance where young unmarried girls can take part. The girls are dressed in their traditional best, bedecked with gold and silver crowns and also traditonal necklaces and other neck wears. The men dance with open swords in one hand and a white yak hair whisk in the other. They dance to the rhythmic beats of the drums and to the musical notes of the flute which creates a network of melody in the background.

Hey such a lovely pic!!! So much color and energy.

I have had the opportunity to meet some of the Khasi people. Lovely people... lot more western in lifestyle than some of the other Indians I know.

I do hope India recovers fast from the recent attacks. The only way to fight these acts is to move on with life like they never happened. May India rise stronger.
